About Dr. Gittos

Dr Gittos is a fully AHPRA registered medical specialist in Ophthalmology, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye.

Dr Gittos has now returned to Australia and joined The Newcastle Eye Centre based in Bolton St Newcastle, and also consulting in Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay, Maitland and Singleton. He operates privately at Lingard Hospital in Newcastle and at East Maitland Private Hospital. He also holds a public appointment with the Hunter and New England Health Authority consulting at the John Hunter Hospital and operating at Kurri Kurri Hospital.

 

Dr Gittos is pleased to receive both public and private referrals for Cataract surgery, Glaucoma and Medical Retina treatments. He offers sub-specialist expertise in the management of eyelid conditions, tear drainage problems, and both intraocular and ocular surface tumours. This includes surgery for eyelid malpositions and tumours, including eyelid reconstruction techniques, as well as cosmetic concerns involving the eyelids and upper face.

Dr Gittos is often complimented on the time he spends with patients particularly providing clear and full explanations to them about their eye condition, the various treatment options available and the potential advantages and disadvantages of those options. Patients often comment that he is the first person who has properly explained their condition to them.

Cataract Surgery

Dr Gittos has over twenty years experience in performing cataract surgery and over this time has performed over four thousand operations. He has experience in using Toric intraocular lenses for the correction of astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery and is also able to offer multifocal lens implants for suitable patients. He has been actively involved in training surgeons in cataract surgery with for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom.

Oculoplastic Surgery

As a subspecialist Oculoplastic Surgeon, Dr Gittos is specifically qualified in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the periocular region and upper face. He has considerable experience and expertise in the management of eyelid tumours including eyelid reconstruction following tumour excision using a wide range of techniques. He has experience and is specifically trained in both functional and cosmetic blepharoplasty, surgery for the correction of ptosis and eyelid malposition, as well as eyebrow surgery, and has considerable experience in surgery for disorders of the lacrimal drainage system for the relief of watery eye.

Lacrimal Surgery

Surgery for the treatment of watery eyes may involve procedures on either the eyelids, the lacrimal duct, or both. As an oculoplastic surgeon, Dr Gittos has specific training in this field and has performed several hundred lacrimal bypass operations including DCR, CDCR and Lester Jones Tubes.

Glaucoma Treatment

Dr Gittos has over twenty years experience in the treatment of Glaucoma using medications, laser treatments and surgery. He has considerable experience in trabeculectomy surgery using antimetabolites and releasable suture techniques. He is also accredited in the use of the iStent minimally invasive glaucoma shunt (MIGS). This recent development in the approach to glaucoma management is useful in bridging the gap between treatment with drops, and more complex and potentially complicated trabeculectomy surgery.

Ocular Oncology

Dr Gittos has specific training and extensive experience at a subspecialist level in the diagnosis and treatment of both intraocular and ocular surface tumours. These include ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), conjunctival melanoma, uveal melanoma, uveal metastasis, benign uveal tumours and retinoblastoma. As a fully trained Ocular Oncologist, he has personally performed over two hundred radioactive plaque insertions for ocular melanoma and several hundred enucleations for melanoma and retinoblastoma. He has considerable experience in the management of ocular surface tumours including squamous neoplasia and conjunctival melanoma using surgery, radioactive plaque treatments, and topical treatments. London was one of the busiest centres in the world for the treatment of retinoblastoma at the time and considerable experience was gained in managing this rare condition.

Medical Retina

Dr Gittos worked in the medical retina service at Moorfields Eye Hospital London, for a period of twelve months under the supervision of some of the most internationally acclaimed specialists in the field, including Professor Alan Bird. He gained considerable experience in the diagnosis and management of these conditions including diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusion and macula degeneration. He has considerable experience in the use of laser treatments and intravitreal injections for these conditions.
